Reentry Support & Community Engagement Internship Opportunities

RCSG is seeking to fill internship positions that are designed to provide students with hands-on experience in the non-profit sector, providing exposure to direct service/advocacy operations and general business functions. Our internship program is an excellent opportunity for students to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting, develop professional skills, and gain insights into the operations of a dynamic organization. Interns will work closely with department leaders and team members to contribute to projects and initiatives that drive the organization’s success. Interns can expect to participate in professional development and learning activities such as:

  • Supervision, reflection sessions, and team meetings that support skill development.

  • Exposure to nonprofit operations, reentry services, advocacy, and community-led organizing.

  • Trainings related to trauma-informed care, restorative justice, reentry, and systems change.

​

The term and weekly hours of this position is open-ended and may be negotiated to the time limitations/schedule of the student. This position is an in-person opportunity, located at RCSG headquarters; 32 Prince Street, Newark, NJ 07103.

Responsibilities & Duties (1 or more of the following):

Program Support

  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of reentry and community-based programs, including support groups, special events, and resume, digital literacy, and voter education workshops,

  • Support facilitators and staff during program activities by preparing materials, tracking attendance, and assisting with follow-up.

  • Help prepare and disseminate program flyers via social media.

Reentry Case Management

  • Support relationship-based engagement with program participants (“returning citizens”) in a respectful, trauma-informed, and strengths-based manner (training will be provided).

  • Assist with participant intake, referrals, and follow-up communications under staff supervision.

  • Help maintain accurate and confidential participant records in accordance with organizational policies.

  • Support community outreach efforts and partner communications as appropriate.

Fundraising Research & Proposal Support

  • Conduct research on public and private funding opportunities aligned with RCSG’s mission and programs.

  • Assist with drafting sections of grant proposals, letters of intent, and reports, including program descriptions, need statements, and outcomes.

  • Support the collection and organization of program data, success stories, and impact metrics for grant and donor reporting.

Administrative & Organizational Support

  • Provide general administrative support, including data entry, scheduling, file organization, and meeting preparation.

  • Assist with maintaining internal tracking systems, databases, and shared documents.

  • Support internal communications, including emails, meeting notes, and basic document preparation.

 

Community Organizing & Systems Change Advocacy

  • Support grassroots organizing efforts that advance policy and systems change impacting justice-impacted individuals and their families.

  • Assist in engaging community members and stakeholders in advocacy initiatives, including campaigns related to reentry, workforce access, and criminal justice reform.

  • Conduct policy and landscape research to inform advocacy strategies and identify opportunities for impact.

  • Help amplify the voices of returning citizens through storytelling, outreach, and public awareness efforts.

Desired Applicants:

  • Justice-impacted individuals are highly encouraged to apply!

  • Current undergraduate or graduate students, or  recent college graduates.

  • Desired majors: Social Work, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Communications, Public Health, Public Administration, Political Science, or any other field related to human services.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
